online communities

Scouts this website leads to an online community of scout leaders around New Zealand.

The reason for this community is to allow scout leaders of New Zealand to talk to each other share problems and advice, and also to share resources. it is also a site where they can look up information and documents needed to run a successful scout group.

i find this site to be quite interactive however some other people would differ in opinion. it has been designed to meet the needs of my generation however a large number of our leaders are of an older generation. people contribute to this site by sending in photos and by discussion on the discussion board.

Leaders chose to contribute on this site because it means that there is a large sense unitement amongst the leaders of New Zealand and support is there when the leaders need it.

Ethical issues arise when there are large national problems going on. an example is when they use to have the discussion board on facebook and when a large national fundraising campaign went through there was a lot of back lash and negative behaviour directed towards a particular person.

This community lacks the ability to have young leaders who are also youth members contributing because of a safety protection meaning that youth members don't have access to all of the site. This also has flaws as youth members dont have access to all the information and therefore can miss out on opportunities.

image capture and using Youtube

Youtube is a video sharing website in which users can upload, share and view videos from all over the world, youtube uses Adobe Flash Video technology to display a wide variety of video content, including movie clips, TV clips, and music videos, as well as amateur content such as video blogging and short original videos and How to videos. Most of the content on YouTube has been uploaded by individuals however more and more businesses offer teasers of their products on youtube.

In the next posting i will explain how to place a video on youtube via a youtube video
for now i will explain how we as a class made our own videos to be placed on youtube, however in my circumstances the video we made was unable to be put up due to not having consent from all members of the group.
The video was started with a theme which was overcoming adversity we then developed this into a story line which is what we call a Story Board. as Quoted by James Storyboards go back to the very beginnings of cinema, with Sergei Eisenstein using the technique. In the world of animation, Walt Disney and his staff developed a storyboard system in 1928. Disney wanted to achieve full animation and for this he needed to produce an enormous number of drawings. Managing the thousands of drawings and the progress of the project was nearly impossible, so Disney had his artists pin up their drawings on the studio walls. This way, progress could be checked, and scenes added and discarded with ease.
for our group we planned and drew the story board.
once our storyboard was decided on and planned we then filmed. once we filmed the video we then put it on the computers and edited it adding our own sounds and lighting effects. once done we put on our blogs and added our own youtube videos as ill explain in the next post

assistive technology allowing inclusion

so we had our assistive technology tutorial with Dave which was GREAT!!
Suddenly lots of ideas popped into my head with how i can adapt outdoor adventurer equipment to enable those less able to participate in outdoor adventure programs. which is after all my overall goal.

With assistive equipment it is interesting how simple it can be and how complicated it can be to adapt equipment to meant the needs.
One of the reasons i really enjoyed this session apart from how many ideas it opened up for future adventure stuff, was the level of emphasis on PLAY, because of my firm beliefs of how play can underpin a persons life. some of the equipment we got to experiment with today consisted of a fire truck and a dinosaur that you could control via use of a variation of clickers. These are the sort of things that make my breath catch when i think about the kids i've known and how they have been excluded from the joys of toys because they do not have the ability to use them. so the main pieces of equipment i was fascinated with was the fire truck this can be purchased at
star education
for $45 dollars. The fire truck has adaptable switches which control the lights and sirens, providing endless enjoyment for children whom normally wouldnt be able to use it.

also in here i would like to talk about assistive technology in the form of the "wii" during my first placement which was mental health community day programs i introduce the Wii as something fun to do for the fitness group it was a huge success with all the clients having a blast and not wanting to leave. On my last placement i encountered a client with brain injury who had quite an extreme physical rehabilitation program and needless to say she hated it, it wasnt fun. this made me wonder if her participation in the program would be increased if the physio was a bit more flexible and incorporated something like the wii games into her fitness.
its something to think about.....
